Five Days Remain

“I see you’re wasting no time getting away from my son,” Alexander’s harsh voice said.

“How do you keep doing this?” I asked, looking around.

We were standing in the front yard of my home. The lights were out, which suggested that everyone was asleep. I looked at Alexander and then at the sky. It must have been well after midnight by now.

“The time I’ve spent with Her Majesty has proven to be quite beneficial for my internal magic.” He gave me a cruel smile.

“That doesn’t explain how your ‘internal magic’ works on me.”

“Oh, such a hot temper, Ana, really?”

“Why do you insist on calling me that horrible name? I have not been Ana since … that day.” I motioned with my hand, trying to get across that I remembered what had happened.

“Oh! So, you do remember now. You remember how cold you were when I confronted you, how you swore up and down that it was nothing more than a hit, that you had orders to end her. Emotionless, completely void of any understanding, you were completely oblivious to your mistake. Sure, you killed my love and left my son an orphan. I was supposed just to place my sword at your feet and pretend that what you did was right?” He took a deep breath. “So, now you understand why Daddy here is completely against the two of you having any relations whatsoever.”

He gave me a stern expression and motioned toward the house. His eyes were glued to the darkness. I could feel the unapproving parental emotions oozing from his flesh.

“He’s asleep in there, in your bed?”

“Yes, but that’s only because I have limited space for guests,” I grumbled.

Of all the times to give a damn about modesty, this was not the time.

“Doesn’t sound like a very innocent relationship to me.” He raised his eyebrows as he stared at the dark windows. I wondered if he could see inside.

“Nothing has happened between Phillip and me.” I stepped into his line of sight so he had to look at me.

“Oh please, Ana, I’ve seen how he looks at you and how you look at him. Never in all the years that I knew you did you ever look at a man the way you look at my son.” He turned his head to the side and glared at me.

“I’m different now. I’m not the same person I was a year ago.” I had no idea why I even found it necessary to plead my case.

Phillip and I had maintained a trusting relationship that didn’t even have a title.

“Person! You dare to call yourself a person? You’re delusional if you believe that you’re considered an individual. I do you a favor, and you repay me by doing this?”

“I live, I breathe, I eat, and I sleep. I do every single thing that a person does. So how does that not make me one?”

I was starting to get fed up with people assuming that just because I wasn’t born to a mother and father that I wasn’t on the same level as any human.
